Impact due to Hurricanes Katrina - 9/01/05

Due to Hurricane Katrina the first session of LaACES at LSU will take place Thursday September 8 evening at 7 pm in room 326 of Nicholson Hall. All students potentially interested in the LaACES 2005-2006 program should attend this session.

LaACES Begins 2005-2006 Program - 8/04/05

LaACES will begin its next season of student training and balloon payload development within the next several weeks.  Institutions involved in the 2005-2006 academic year program include Louisiana State University, University of New Orleans, Southern University, Louisiana Tech and McNeese.  Students interested in participating in this years program should contact their institution LaACES leader (See the Groups page).

LaACES Balloon Launch Successfully Concluded - 5/30/05

On May 24, 2005 two balloon vehicles (ACES-02 and ACES-03) were successfully launched from the National Scientific Balloon Facility.  These vehicles carried six student-built payloads from five Louisiana institutions to altitudes in excess of 100,000 feet.  Futher, details about the flights and payloads can be found on the Flight Information page.

HASP Project Funded - 5/12/05

Construction of the High Altitude Student Platform (HASP) will be funded by the Louisiana Board of Regents.  HASP is a ballooncraft system dedicated to support student built payloads that will be carried to altitudes up to ~120,000 feet for durations up to ~20 hours by use of the multi-million cubic feet polyethylene film balloon.  HASP will support more complex, heavier student-built payloads or micro-satellite prototypes than is possible using latex sounding balloons.  Further details about HASP can be found on the Documents page.

LaACES Balloon Launch Set for Tuesday Morning - 5/23/05

Students from six Louisiana institutions have gathered at the NASA National Scientific Balloon Facility with the small balloon-borne experiment they have designed and built over the last year.  Tomorrow, May 24, will be the day that all of then have been waiting for .....  LAUNCH!    Pre-flight operations will being at 5:30 am and rollout to the launch pad will take place about 6:30am.  Launch of the ACES-02 balloon is expected to take place about 7:30 am, followed by ACES-03 at about 8:00 am.   Each vehicle will carry two GPS radio beacon and you can track the progress of each flight by using the link found on our Online Tracking page

LaACES Teams Head to Texas - 5/19/05

Six payloads designed and built by undergraduates from five Louisiana institutions are expected to be launched to the very edge of space next Tuesday, May 24, from the National Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas.  The institutions include LSU, ULL, UNO, SU and LaTech and the student payloads will involve investigations of cosmic rays, ultra-violet radiation, humidity at high altitude, the geomagnetic field and the efficiency of test solar cells.  Further details about the ACES-02 and ACES-03, including real-time tracking during the flight, can be found on the Flight Information page. 

LSU Team Completes PDR - 3/4/05

The LSU Team has successfully completed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for their Magnitude of the Geomagnetic Field Experiment (MAGGEX) payload.  For details, including a copy of the PDR document, see the LSU Team page under the Groups page.

LaACES Presentations at the SPS Zone 10 Meeting - 3/1/05

This week's SPS Zone 10 meeting in Lafayette, Louisiana will feature an ~hour long session on the LaACES program.  Dr. Guzik will provide a 15 minute summary of the overall program and each institution will provide a 5 minute or so presentation of their particular payload(s).  This special session will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday March 5, 2005.  See http://physics.louisiana.edu/SPS/ for details about the Zone meeting.

LaACES Flight Operations Date - 2/19/05

LaACES flight operations for the 2004-2005 academic year will take place May 22, 2005 through May 26, 2005.  Flight Readiness Reviews (FRR) will begin the morning of May 23 and, consequently, FRR documents need to be at LSU by May 9, 2005.  Balloon launch is anticipated for May 24 and science presentations will be held the morning of May 26.

LSU Team Completes Project PIZZA - 2/5/05

Project PIZZA is the activities associated with the Student Ballooning Course Project Management unit.  The project preliminary design review was conducted 1/27/05 and operations were successfully completed on 2/5/05.  For details see the LSU Team page under the Groups page.

LaSPACE Approved for LaACES II - 1/26/05

NASA announced that Louisiana will be one of 32 states to be awarded Workforce Development Grants.  This source of support will allow us to continue LaACES into the 2005-2006 academic year, continue involving students with the MIMIC student-built Mars probe and start development of an Advanced ACES program.

Groups Page Updates - 12/08/04

We have revised the LaACES groups page to include specific information about your student team.  Please take the time to review your page and send me updates (so we can fill in the missing blanks) as well as corrections to the posted information.  If you establish a local website for your LaACES group please send us the URL so we can include it on the Groups page.

Student Ballooning Course Evaluations - 12/08/04

Please complete the student and instructor evaluations for the Student Balloon Course units you did this semester and return these evaluations to LSU by December 21, 2004

Video Conferencing Capability - 12/08/04

This is a reminder that if you already have not done so, please investigate your ability to do video conferencing over IP at your institution (compatible with Polycom ViewStation FX, H.323 protocol).  We are planning several video conferences next semester including one with Kennedy Space Center.

Preliminary Design Review Schedule - 12/08/04

This is a reminder that your student team Preliminary Design Reviews need to be held sometime during February 2005 and must be coordinated with LSU.  Please inform us as soon as possible about your plans.

ACES and HASP Publications - 11/03/04

Publications of the 35th COSPAR presentations on LaACES and HASP have been submitted to Advances in Space Research.  PDF versions of these papers are available on the LaACES Documents page.

LaACES Leader Training Workshop - May 2004
