|The month of
August, 2000 was spent at the National Scientific Balloon Facility
(NSBF) in Palestine, Texas integrating the ATIC instrument with the NSBF
"ballooncraft" components. During this time we tested all payload
systems including the satellite communication links, powering the
instrument from the solar panels, uplinking commands and downlinking
status information and the NSBF rotator which will keep the ATIC solar
panels facing the Sun.
On August 25, 2000 ATIC underwent the Mission Readiness Review (MRR).
During the MRR results from the month long pre-deployment integration
were presented and examined for issues that may need to be addressed
prior to flight. Only a few items were identified and should be
resolved over the next few months.
Following the MRR the ATIC experiment and support equipment was
crated and shipped to McMurdo, Antarctica. The ATIC crew is now
working to complete the physical qualification paperwork as well as
preparing a few last minute items for late shipment.
The ATIC crew members will arrive at McMurdo toward the end of
October and will begin preparing the payload for a December, 2000
ATIC crate ready for shipment to
